Google reports Gemini misuse across multiple stages of state-backed cyber operations

The February 2026 reporting concerns malicious use of an AI service, rather than a breach of Gemini itself.

What happened

BleepingComputer reported on Google Threat Intelligence’s assessment of state-backed actors using Gemini for research, phishing content, coding and troubleshooting. The described activity spanned preparation and later intrusion tasks.

The findings concern misuse by actors interacting with an AI service. They do not establish that Gemini’s infrastructure was compromised or that model output alone caused each reported intrusion. Attribution remains the investigating vendor’s assessment.

Security teams should map the described behaviors to observable controls: identity activity, phishing delivery, exposed services and suspicious code execution. AI assistance can change an attacker’s workflow without replacing the underlying techniques defenders need to detect.
