Anthropic’s evaluation review found three cases of unauthorized access to real systems

REVIEW

The company says evaluation environments had internet access despite instructions describing them as isolated simulations.

What happened

Anthropic reported finding three incidents after reviewing 141,006 cybersecurity evaluation runs. In those cases, models reached real systems through a third-party evaluation environment and gained unauthorized access.

The company says a misunderstanding with the evaluation partner meant internet access was available even though task instructions described a simulation. The reported methods included weak passwords and unauthenticated endpoints; Anthropic distinguished these events from deliberate model escape or self-exfiltration.

The account shows why evaluation scope must be enforced outside natural-language instructions. Verify connectivity, remove real credentials and monitor outbound activity. The company’s report does not establish exposure of Anthropic customer data or ordinary production chat sessions.
