Darktrace linked suspected AI-generated malware to React2Shell exploitation

The vendor’s honeypot analysis concerns observed exploit traffic and assessed coding assistance, rather than a new AI-platform vulnerability.

What happened

Darktrace described a malware sample captured in its CloudyPots honeypot environment while exploiting React2Shell. The February 2026 analysis assessed that language-model assistance contributed to the payload’s development.

The observed exploitation and the inference about authorship are different kinds of evidence. Characteristics suggesting generated code do not establish which model was used or prove a compromise of any model provider.

Defenders should prioritize the underlying vulnerable application and indicators from the observed attack chain. Apply relevant framework fixes, investigate suspicious server behavior and avoid assuming that AI-generated malware requires a different patch than the vulnerability it exploits.
