What happened

Google DeepMind introduced CodeMender in October 2025 as a research agent for finding and repairing vulnerable code. The team said it had upstreamed 72 security fixes over six months of development.

The announcement describes tools for reasoning about code, checking proposed changes and validating that patches do not introduce regressions. Those are vendor-reported early results, not an independent benchmark covering every software project.

For maintainers, the important question is whether an individual patch is correct, reviewable and supported by tests. AI assistance can expand the repair pipeline, while human review and project-specific validation remain part of accepting a change.
