Research explained
Historical Gemini demonstration used hidden email instructions to fabricate warnings
The reported proof of concept manipulated an email summary; it is not evidence that a real Google security warning was issued.
What happened
Dark Reading’s July 2025 reporting describes a Gemini prompt-injection demonstration involving hidden instructions in an email. When the recipient requested a summary, the payload attempted to make the assistant append a fabricated security warning.
The consequence described is social engineering: a user might trust the assistant’s summary more than the untrusted message that influenced it. An instruction rendered invisibly in the email can still be available to the model.
Treat unexpected account warnings in generated summaries as unverified. Check security notifications through the service’s known interface rather than a phone number or link supplied by the summary. This retrospective does not assert that every current Gemini deployment retains the demonstrated behaviour.
