MCP security reviews need to look beyond patch levels
A researcher’s architectural critique focuses on how assistants turn external information into tool actions.
What happened
Dark Reading’s March 2026 reporting examined architectural risks in applications using the Model Context Protocol. Researcher Gianpietro Cutolo argued that connecting models to external services changes the consequences of prompt injection.
The argument does not mean patches are useless. Implementation vulnerabilities still need fixes; a patched connector can also remain overprivileged or allow untrusted content to steer sensitive operations.
Review both layers: maintain supported software and constrain what tools may do. Require explicit authorization for consequential actions, separate data from instructions where the application can enforce it and test complete workflows with hostile retrieved content.
Next step
Review tool authority and workflow permissions alongside software updates.
